Changing Paradigms In Hereditary Angioedema: A Focus On Timely Diagnosis And New Therapies
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is an autosomal dominant disease affecting approximately 10,000 people in the United States. HAE causes recurrent attacks of intense localized edema involving the skin, airway, and visceral organs. While chronic therapy with attenuated androgens or plasmin inhibitors has been the mainstay of HAE therapy, many new therapies for prophylaxis and acute treatment are on the horizon. It is important for physicians to understand the signs and symptoms of patients who present with HAE and to be familiar with the conventional and emerging therapies available to treat them.

Administration Shows Early Ties To Health Industry
The administration"s negotiations with the health industry date back to first weeks after President Obama"s inauguration, according to newly released visitor logs that show numerous visits by health industry lobbyists and executives to the White House, the Associated Press/Boston Globe reports. Richard Umbdenstock, the president of the American Hospital Association, visited on Feb. 4 and Angela Braly, an executive at insurer WellPoint visited on Feb. 13.

The pathogenesis and development of colorectal cancer involves multi-genes and multi-steps. TSPAN1 (GenBank Accession No. AF065388) is a new member of TM4SF located at chromosome 1 p34.1. It encodes a 241 amino acid protein. TSPAN1 was reported as a tumor-related gene recently.

Tragic Death Highlights Perils Of Binge Drinking, UK

Commenting on the tragic death of 22-year-old Gary Reinbach, who died as a result of binge drinking since the age of 13, Dr Peter Carter, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said: "First and foremost we extend our sympathy to Gary Reinbach"s family who will be grieving the loss of a man who should have had many years to look forward to. It is a tragedy that the binge drinking crisis in this country has claimed the life of a young man and it highlights just how damaging binge drinking can be and should serve as a warning to others. "Alcohol misuse is an issue that nurses are faced with on a daily basis, and a major health concern. Excessive drinking is both a cultural and a regulatory problem. We need more effective regulation that ensures retailers don"t engage in unscrupulous practises which encourage customers to drink to excess. It is important that alcoholic drinks are clearly labelled so people realise just how much they are drinking. At the same time, we need to step up public health campaigns that educate the public about the dangers of binge drinking." Royal College of Nursing (RCN)
